The project which became By No Means Perfect, By All Means Mine began in March 2021, primarily as a means of developing a physical point of connection to the music I produce. Starting simply as experiments in recording to cassette tape, the project grew under the tentative title FC773, named for the model of Philips cassette deck used on the album.

As I filled up two cassettes of master recordings, I came to realise that these tapes had become objects of sentimental feeling, whose unquantifiable value effects the music they hold. Immediately, the process of writing and recording became more personal, as evidenced through samples of friends and family heard across these tracks. By trawling through old media consisting of phone videos and captured DV tapes, the project began to become deeply introspective. I was weaving my own memories back into themselves, reminiscing but also feeling thankful for those in my life and the experiences we had shared.
When framed by the pandemic, this trajectory towards grounding myself perhaps appears obvious. This project was a process of reflection, recorded during a moment in history where the opportunity for some to take things slower was afforded.
